Kindergarten Math Center at Christmas [Counting, Number Sense, Writing Numbers]

Counting, Number Sense and
Writing Numbers 0-9

Christmas Math Center - Writing Numbers
Spin and record math centers engage students in activity, following directions and working beside another classmate. Children enjoy the spinning action and this spin and record is 'All About Christmas' and counting.

This math center for Christmas time will provide practice in counting, number sense and writing numbers from 0-9. Pages and spinner show clip art that is in a Christmas style; however, the number pages can be used anytime.   And you can make these pages readily available all the time.
Themed centers can heighten your students interest.  However, these math centers need to accomplish your teaching goal : providing opportunity and practice in a skill that you have already taught.  Math stations can also be an excellent way to immerse some of your students with a task that reinforces direct instruction while you are teaching another small group a similar skill.  Learning can be fun and certainly is when brains are thinking and students can have some directed movement that allows them responsibility in their own learning.
Your goals for a math station might be:

  1. Learning
  2. Practice, review and reinforcement in skills previously taught
  3. Independent skills to complete a given task
  4. Confidence
  5. Self-Esteem
  6. Good Work Ethic
  7. Easy to Assess Accuracy
  8. Ease in Observation of student's skills and work habits
  9. Smiles on faces while learning

Counting the Christmas pictures can be merry. Writing the correct numbers shows knowledge of that number.  If you place these in a protective sleeve and use an expo marker, the page can be used over and over.

Directions to use the spinner are included and a very simple way to bring activity to this math station.  You might also use these math station materials for a whole class lesson or small group. When ready, students can use them with a partner or independently.

Teacher facilitation can be minimal if you are certain students can complete the task on their own correctly.  Practicing writing numbers is important.  Often times, the four and five are reversed because of child development stages. It's important that you can catch this and model the correct line up for writing the numbers.  You can print the number writing practice sheets and place them in a bin at your math center.  These practice pages might precipitate the other activity pages as the numbers are in a dotted format to help the early writer .

Christmas is all around us!  And you can even find it at this math center!
