How will you celebrate the 100th day of school without any sugar? Here are five ways you can do that and your students will be smarter and healthier.
#1. Make an Interactive Booklet where students read 100 sight words, spell 100 words, solve 100 math facts, and draw 100 geometric shapes. They love making this booklet and especially love making it to 100 for each of the tasks included
Read 100 Sight Words - Spell 100 words -
Solve 100 Math Facts - Draw 100 geometric shapes
#2. Many teachers like to graph food items. If you are inclined to make a 100's graph, let's make a healthy list of food items you might use instead of those sugary ones
that are not so good for our children. I am very sensitive to the amount of sugar we tend to eat and we need to start making a difference in our classroom by teaching good nutrition. The piles of research points to a need for a better American Diet. I learned long ago in college that as elementary teachers we look at society and ask ourselves 'how can we make it better?' Well, the day has arrived when we might add nutrition to our class lessons. Consuming too much sugar is not healthy and it has an addictive quality. So on this 100th day if you are going to graph some food items, let's graph mini carrots, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, green grapes, sunflower seeds, purple grapes, cherry tomatoes, snap peas or almonds.
#3. Have your class take a "100 Step Walk" around your school. Where will you end up?
Decide on a starting space [your classroom door] and have one student be the stepper and another the counter. Of course, the entire class goes and walks the 100 steps but choosing a single person might make it a bit more accurate.
#4. Brainstorm 100 healthy foods and make a list of these foods. Draw some healthy snacks and make a 100 healthy snack grid.
#5. and my favorite, tape a huge piece of chart paper on your board. Paper should be where your students can reach it. You write the first word. Be sure to number it #1. Ask your students to add more words until you reach 100 ! See photo below from KinderCrazeBlog.com.
Your students will love your shirt. 100 tally marks... be ready to have them start counting by 5's when they see you.
