George Washington Carver - Biography

George Washington Carver 

(c. 1864 to January 5, 1943) was born into slavery and went on to become a botanist and one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time as well as a teacher at the Tuskegee Institute. Carver devised over 100 products using one major crop — the peanut — including dyes, plastics and gasoline.  His journey from a small boy to an amazing scientist that helped farmers and mankind is a memorable one.  You will find your students reading with high-interest. Rosa Parks' 

story shows us determination and tenacity to make a wrong a right.  She lived in a difficult time and believed in fair treatment of all people.  Her story is one to read to encourage speaking up when things are not right.  

Rosa said, "Each person must live their life as a model for others."

Sojourner Truth - Biography & Writing Prompts

Sojourner Truth's story is one of compassion and human spirit to fight for what is right.  She was born into slavery and left our earth with monuments to remember and mark her fight for woman's rights and civil rights. She overcame obstacles that many wouldn't.  She was denied an education because she was black; she never learned to read or write; but oh, could she speak! 

These reading passages encompass important issues about humanity and black history. They are written for the elementary school student.  Pages have easy-to-read print and bold headings.  The writing prompts and graphic organizers are a perfect way to develop thinking and understanding to the reading.  These reading response pages and graphic organizers can help you engage your students in a reading and writing experience about famous and memorable black people in history.

Sakai is masterful in creating anthropomorphic animals that are so believable we can happily accept them in an incongruous setting. The snow falling down is just the beginning of this bunny's adventure in the snow.

Bear Stays Up for Christmas   Bears sleep in winter!  That's what they do! but this bear has friends who want him to stay up, stay awake and enjoy Christmas!  And so the adventure begins... they must find a Christmas tree and bake some cakes.  They need to hang up stockings and sing Christmas songs.  Bear manages to stay up with some help from his friends and he learns an important life lesson.  The lesson of giving!
