November Reading Groups | Magic Tree House Book Companion | Grade 3
There is something wonderful about placing a good book into the hands of a child.
November is the perfect time to bring children's literature into the classroom, and Thanksgiving on Thursday by Mary Pope Osborne, from the popular Magic Tree House series, offers third graders an opportunity to read, imagine, question, and discuss a story together.
Jack and Annie travel back to 1621, where they encounter the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Their adventure provides an engaging starting point for reading comprehension, vocabulary development, thoughtful discussions, and conversations about history.
But perhaps the greatest benefit is simply the pleasure of reading a good book.
Creating a Community of Readers and Writers
Throughout my teaching career, I believed that children become more motivated readers when teachers create a classroom community where reading, writing, and sharing ideas are valued.
A successful reading group is not simply about completing worksheets. It is about children listening to one another, asking questions, sharing opinions, and discovering that books can take them to places they have never been.
Thanksgiving on Thursday is a wonderful choice for small-group reading, literature discussions, and November reading activities.
Encourage students to talk about the characters, make predictions, share their favorite parts, and explain their thinking. Give them opportunities to respond to the story through both conversation and writing.
And most importantly, give them time to enjoy reading!
A Helpful Resource for November Reading Groups
I created my Magic Tree House: Thanksgiving on Thursday book companion with third-grade readers in mind. This 40-page resource includes an answer key and provides teachers with activities to support reading comprehension and understanding of the story.
The activities can be used during small-group instruction, independent reading, or literature discussions. However, I want to share one important teaching suggestion.
You do not need to assign all 40 pages!
In fact, I encourage you not to.
Choose a few meaningful activities for each student that will help you assess reading comprehension, understanding, and written responses. Different students may benefit from different activities. The purpose of these pages is to support the reading experience, not overwhelm it.
Reading Is Its Own Reward
One of the most important lessons I learned as a teacher is that reading should never become just another assignment to finish. Children need opportunities to become absorbed in a story, connect with characters, wonder what happens next, and talk about what they have read.
A book discussion can reveal just as much about a child's understanding as a completed worksheet. When we create a supportive reading-writing community, we help children develop confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong appreciation for literature.
And isn't that what we hope to accomplish?
